Miguel Ángel Guevara Pérez, Ph.D.

e-mail: mguevara@cencar.udg.mx
Full Professor-Researcher “C”
Electroencephalographic Correlation and Behavior Laboratory
Neuroscience Institute, CUCBA
University of Guadalajara

In May 1980, Dr. Guevara joined the staff of the Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía (National Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery) “Manuel Velasco Suárez”, as a computer operator and programmer. In November 1981 he formed part of the academic personnel of the Computer Center of the la Faculty of Psychology at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (National Autonomous University of Mexico) (UNAM). He earned his degree as a Communication Engineer (with specialization in computing) in January 1982 from Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Mexico’s National Polytechnical Institute). In the year 1988, he obtained his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (with specialization in communications), and began to coordinate a Seminar entitled, “Automated Analysis of Bioelectrical Signals in the Brain”, an optional course for M.Sc. students in Psychobiology, in the Graduate Studies Area of the Faculty of Psychology. In 1995, under the direction of Dr. María Corsi Cabrera, he earned his Ph.D. in Physiological Sciences, granted by the Center for Neurobiology at the UNAM.

In late 1994, he was invited as a Visiting Professor-Researcher by the recently created Neuroscience Institute, a dependency of the University Center for Biological and Agricultural Sciences at the Universidad de Guadalajara (University of Guadalajara) where, after resigning from the UNAM in 1997, he assumed a position as a Full-time Professor-Researcher. Upon his incorporation, the founder and first Director of the Institute, Dr. Víctor Manuel Alcaraz Romero, named Dr. Guevara the Head of the Electroencephalographic Correlation and Behavior Laboratory. In that same year, he created the academic group “Biosignals”, which includes various researchers from different institutions in Mexico. Their annual or biannual meetings have produced several books. Since then, he has continued his research and developed studies in the area of computing in collaboration with Dr. María Corsi Cabrera. The interests of this Laboratory revolve around the application of the correlation of analyses of electroencephalographic signals and the study of the participation of the prefrontal cortex in motivational processes. In close collaboration with Dr. Marisela Hernández González, Dr. Guevara has published the results (in articles and book chapters) of diverse research projects, as well as various computer programs designed to capture and analyze electroencephalographic signals and for application in the study of tasks that evaluate cognitive processes (eg. Towers of Hanoi, Corsi Cubes, Wisconsin, puzzles, etc). The impact of his scientific work is reflected in the numerous citations of his studies. At present, he is a Full-time, tenured Professor-Researcher. Dr. Guevara belongs to a consolidated academic leadership group at the Institute, is an active member of the Mexican Society of Physiological Sciences and the Society for Neuroscience. He has been recognized by the PROMEP Program since 1993, and is a member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers. His research activities have been accompanied by his role as a Thesis Director and Professor at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate levels.
