The Psychophysiology of Cognitive and Emotional Processes

1. Neuropsychological, anatomical and electrophysiological alterations in schizophrenia.  Schizophrenia is a psychotic ailment characterized by a series of positive and negative symptoms that manifest themselves in subjects’ inability to function socially. In schizophrenic patients who are unresponsive to treatment, we have identified certain neuroanatomical and neurochemical alterations, changes in cerebral electrical organization and cognitive and emotional alterations that are distinct from those seen in subjects who do respond to treatment. Moreover, we have evaluated the changes in those alterations propitiated by different treatments.

2. Sexual differences in cerebral electrical activity and cognitive and emotional processes.  By recording the spontaneous (EEG) and provoked (PRE) cerebral electrical activity in relation to neuropsychological tasks, we examine differences in the cerebral functioning between men and women, and between adults and children, in both a state of repose and while they are resolving diverse types of cognitive and emotional tasks. Also, we are inquiring into the role played by sexual hormones in generating such differences.

3. The cognition-emotion relationship.  There is an important reciprocal influence between cognitive and emotional processes that has not yet been widely studied. Our interest is in examining this close relationship between cognition and emotion at different levels using populations of children and adults, through the application of neuropsychological and electrophysiological techniques.

4. The effects of music on human behavior and emotions have long been evident at an empirical level, but only recently has interest arisen in objectively measuring these effects, and this represents another area of research interest in this laboratory.
